Jeep Wrangler Review

I almost bought a Jeep Wrangler a few years ago. My primary motivation was to put a motorcycle carrier on the back to haul around my dirt bike. I ended up selling my Yamaha WR250R before getting the Jeep. Regardless, the Jeep Wrangler is a lot of fun to drive off-road. If you like playing in the mud, water, and rocks, the Wrangler will put a big smile on your face. Make sure you watch the following videos showing the Wrangler in action. It’s capabilities are quite impressive.

Jeep Wrangler Models

The Jeep Wrangler comes in 16 different models, so you have a lot of choices depending on your likes and needs. There are two main model classifications, the Wrangler, and the Wrangler Unlimited. The primary difference is that the Unlimited is larger, having 4 doors, seating for 5 passengers, and more cargo carrying capacity.

Both the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited come in five basic models: Sport, Islander, Mountain, Sahara, and Rubicon, with some additional variations within a model. Each model primarily builds on the the basic sport model, however, the Rubicon adds some serious off-road features, such as off-road tires.

For more model details, see the Jeep web site: Jeep Wrangler Models.

Key Features

The Wrangler has the distinctive Jeep look, that just screems get me off this pavement and onto some dirt. It is a rugged design based on the Jeep off-road legacy. Each model builds upon the Sport model with additional feature packages. The Rubicon, at the top end, comes with the most pure off-road features.

Wranglers come with a 3.8-liter V6 engine, a 6-speed manual transmission, and electronic stability control. The 4-door Wrangler Unlimited is basically a bigger version of the 2-door Wrangler, with many of the same features. In addition to 4-doors and larger size, the Unlimited has some additional options such as 4-speed automatic transmission.

Both the Wrangler and Wrangler unlimited are designed for serious off-road driving. With its high ground clearance, it is capable of driving through water up to 30 inches deep. The Wrangler’s short length and wheelbase provides for a tight turning radius, making it very maneuverable off road. The Unlimited has a longer wheel base, making it more stable for highway driving, but less manueuverable in tight off-road spaces.

I won’t attempt to describe all of the options here. Additional specification details can be found at Jeep Wrangler Highlights and Specifications.

Off-Road Performance

Jeep claims that a higher percentage of Jeep owners take their vehicles off-road than any other type of SUV. This is clearly what Jeep consider to be their defining demographic. As you hopefully saw in these videos, the Jeep Wrangler can tackle some very serious off-road terrain. If crossing rivers or climbing rocks is in your future, the Jeep Wrangler is up for the challenge.

The Jeep Wrangler has won several Best Vehicle awards, such as Best 4×4 Vehicle of the Decade from Four Wheeler Magazine, and Best New Car for Off-Roaders from Cars.com. This clearly demonstrates the Wrangler’s off-road prowess. You probably won’t find the Jeep Wrangler winning awards for best commute vehicle, but driving around topless on a sunny day can almost make up for lack of comfort features.

What do you want in an SUV?

If you are looking for a serious off-road vehicle, the Jeep Wrangler may be just for you. If your primary use is to haul the kids to soccer practice, the Wrangler may not have the passenger carrying capacity or feature comforts you want in an SUV.  But, if you only have a couple of kids, and like to go topless, this can be a fun commute vehicle.
