Motorcycle Road Trip 2011 – Day 21

Day 21 of my motorcycle road trip, and today was an easy day touring around Montreal, Quebec. It had been many years since I last was in Montreal. Although my memory of that visit is quite foggy, it doesn’t seem to have changed too much. Maybe that was because we spent most of our time in Old Montreal.

We started the day heading up Mount Royal. I believe this is where the name Montreal originates. It was a reasonably clear day, so from Mount Royal we could see much of the city.

Next we headed to Old Montreal. This is one of my favorite spots in North America. It has a very European feel to it. Partially because everything is in French. But also because of the old architecture. It is one of the oldest city areas in North America, with some buildings dating back to the 17th century. The city has  maintained the old cobble streets to accentuate the European feel. You can even take a ride in a horse drawn carriage to continue with the theme.

We walked from Old Montreal to the Port of Montreal. I was quite surprised that what seems like prime real estate on the St. Lawrence River was primarily used as a large parking lot. Given how other cities like San Francisco have turned their waterfronts into tourist areas, I was surprised that Montreal hasn’t done the same.

Wandering back to Old Montreal, we stopped at a quaint little restaurant for lunch. Restaurant Bella Vita reminded that, yes, “Life is Good.” We were seated us at a window table that had a nice view of the street and horse drawn carriages rolling by. We could even open the window to give us an outdoor patio feeling with the breeze blowing across our table. The food was very good, too.

After a little more sight-seeing, we found the Montreal BMW motorcycle dealer. I had to pick up a new headlight, and a few other miscellaneous things, for some preventative maintenance on my motorcycle.

Back in Pointe-Claire for the evening. I had dinner with Jack and Christine, and several of their friends, at Clydes Restaurant in downtown Pointe-Claire. It was a beautiful evening, and we had a nice table outdoors. After dinner we walked along the St. Lawrence River and the Pointe-Claire harbor back to their home. The river is so wide at this point, it almost looks like a lake. In all, a very nice day.
